We have all come across situations where we were asked to share our opinions or where we wanted to put forth an opinion. Over social media, this is very easy to do with the abbreviation IMO. If you are wondering what it means, it is the abbreviation for “In My Opinion”. Just as the term sounds, it is used to express an opinion but in an informal way. It is not rude or an uneasy term but is a little different from IMHO.
This term is clearly used when someone feels something about a situation or a person and wants to be open about it. It can get difficult to choose between IMHO and this term sometimes. Therefore, look at the following comparison and use the term as it is best suited with the situation –
IMHO and IMO – What is the difference?
- IMHO, it shows more humility and modesty to the statement. This explains how it is more of a formal way to express your opinion without pressing it on somebody else. It is a more polite way of putting forward an opinion.
- IMO on the other hand declares an opinion straight-forwardly. Unlike IMHO, it shows a pressing opinion. It can mostly be used in informal settings and is preferred over text with friends and family.
Examples –
“IMO the pink dress looks better on you than the blue dress. It is also very apt for the event.” Here the person is giving an opinion on the clothing most probably to a friend. This is a very good way of using this term as it best suits the situation.
“If you think you still want to watch the movie then it is okay. But IMO it is very disturbing and I know how much these visuals affect you always.” In this case, the person is trying to share their opinion about a movie because they think that the other person might get affected by the visuals.
“IMO you are rude sometimes and do not think how certain things can affect other people.” In this case, the person is expressing their honest opinion about somebody’s behaviour. This term can also be used in this manner.
