Multiple times, we see things on the internet that we disapprove of. Sometimes, we are so in disbelief of certain things online and we want to express it online over social media. The term SMH is a very widely used term online that is used to indicate expressions of disappointment, disbelief and disapproval. When someone types “SMH” in response to a post or comment, they’re indicating that they find something frustrating, nonsensical, or disappointing.
Whether we disagree with a fact on social media or cannot believe someone online, this term can help express all this on social media. Sometimes, people say things that sound extremely ridiculous and frustrating. To express these situations, shaking my head can be used. It is a lightweight term that can be used by everyone.
This abbreviation can be used in formal conversations as well. If someone has given you numbers in a meeting and you disapprove of them, then simply say that you can not shake your head off from the numbers that were presented to you. Isn’t it so much easier to express things over text using abbreviations?
Examples –
“I can’t SMH from all the ratings I read about the movie. I personally think it was a great movie and it deserves to be recognized well.” Here the person disapproves of the movie rating because he thinks the movie is better than what the ratings suggest.
For another example, if someone shares a news story about a ridiculous event, a commenter might respond with “SMH” to show their disapproval or disbelief.
“He thinks that women are better off working in the house. I can’t SMH from this thinking. Where do people even learn all this?” In this case, a person is showing frustration against a point of view. He thinks otherwise and is not pleased by the comment.
“I got straight A’s in my finals. I still can’t SMH from the report card.” In this example, a student is showing disbelief and is expressing it by using the abbreviation in the text message.
